GST Calculator (India)
Add GST to a base price, or pull the GST out of an inclusive price — with the CGST/SGST split shown for intra-state sales. Updated for the GST 2.0 slab structure: 5% and 18% main rates, 40% on demerit goods.
Since the September 2025 GST 2.0 reforms, India has two main slabs — 5% (essentials, many daily-use items) and 18% (most goods and services) — plus a 40% rate on demerit/luxury goods. The old 12% and 28% slabs were largely merged away; many older calculators still show them.
GST 2.0 slabs at a glance (post-September 2025)
| Rate | Applies to (examples) |
|---|---|
| 0% | Unbranded food staples, fresh produce, many essentials; individual health & life insurance premiums |
| 5% | Packaged food items, many daily-use goods, footwear and apparel in lower price bands, economy services |
| 18% | The standard rate — most goods and services, electronics, restaurants (non-specified), professional services |
| 40% | Demerit and luxury goods: tobacco products, pan masala, aerated/sugary drinks, high-end vehicles |
| 3% / 0.25% | Special rates: gold and precious metals / rough diamonds |
For intra-state sales, GST splits equally into CGST (central) and SGST (state) — 18% becomes 9% + 9%. Inter-state sales charge the full rate as IGST instead. Exact classification of specific items changes with GST Council notifications, so verify your product's current rate on the official CBIC portal before invoicing.
Frequently asked questions
What are the GST slabs in India now?
After the GST 2.0 reforms of September 2025, the structure is: 0% on essentials, two main slabs of 5% and 18%, a 40% rate on demerit and luxury goods (tobacco, pan masala, sugary drinks, high-end cars), and special rates of 3% for gold and 0.25% for rough diamonds. The earlier 12% and 28% slabs were largely merged into 5% and 18%.
How do I remove GST from an inclusive price?
Divide by (1 + rate/100). For an 18%-inclusive price of ₹1,180: 1180 ÷ 1.18 = ₹1,000 base, ₹180 GST. The common mistake is subtracting 18% of the inclusive price (₹212.40), which over-removes — use the divide method or the Remove GST mode above.
What is the difference between CGST, SGST, and IGST?
For sales within one state, GST splits equally: half CGST (to the centre) and half SGST (to the state) — an 18% sale is 9% + 9%. For inter-state sales, the full rate is charged as a single IGST. The customer pays the same total either way.
Is GST calculated on MRP?
No — MRP is the maximum price inclusive of all taxes, so GST is already inside it. A retailer cannot add GST on top of MRP. To see the tax inside an MRP, use Remove GST mode with the item's rate.
